LETTER TO READERS

For most of the last decade we have argued a single point from a dozen different directions.

The United States is not in decline, the dollar sits at the center of the world whether the world cares for it or not, and the smart money betting against American primacy has been early in the way that is hard to tell apart from wrong.

Regular readers know the argument by heart. What we have not done, until now, is ask the question that sits one floor below it. If American finance is going to keep its grip on the world, where in America is it going to keep that grip from?

The consensus, on the rare occasion it asks at all, gives an answer that is not really an answer. Finance will continue to live in New York because finance has always lived in New York. And on the rare occasion the consensus lets itself picture New York losing the role, it pictures the crown leaving the country altogether, crossing an ocean to Shanghai or Hong Kong or drifting back to London, as if the only thing that could follow one coast were a different continent.

I think that is wrong.

I have thought so for a while, and I have watched the reaction on enough faces across enough dinners to know the idea still sounds slightly ridiculous the moment you say it in a room. So I am going to say it in a room.

If the financial capital of the world ever leaves New York, it is not going to China. It is going to Texas.

It may already be leaving, and most of the people it is leaving behind have not looked up.

I did not arrive at this from a single chart, though the charts are in here and they are not subtle. It began as a pattern I could not stop noticing. The bank announcements that used to be satellite offices and are now campuses. The moving trucks. The exchange that went from a pitch deck to a live order book in the time it takes most regulators to schedule a meeting. The quiet decisions of people who vote with balance sheets instead of op-eds.

Any one of them is an anecdote. Stacked together they are a direction.

I want to be careful about the claim, because it is easy to overstate and the cartoon version does not interest me.

I am not telling you New York falls. New York does not fall.

I am telling you the center of gravity is shifting, that it is shifting faster than the people standing on the old center want to say out loud, and that it is shifting toward the one place the industry spent two generations using as its favorite punchline.

That last part is not a detail. It is the whole tell, and I get to why in the pages that follow.

One more thing before you turn the page, because it governs how to read everything after it.

I am not writing this to argue that Texas is right, or good, or that the country ought to arrange itself this way. I have spent much of the last ten years on a single discipline, which is to write what I think is actually going to happen whether I want it to or not, and to keep my preferences out of the forecast.

So when the chapters ahead describe a certain swagger, an old frontier instinct to think big and refuse to apologize that the last decade tried hard to sand down, read it the way I mean it, for better and for worse in the same breath, as the description of a current already running and not a verdict on whether it should.

I am not a priest, I am not a therapist, and I am not a judge.

I am an analyst and a forecaster.

Everything after this page is the case, built on the evidence and the structure rather than on sentiment.

This page is just me telling you where I come down before I show the work.
