The Federal Reserve voted yesterday. The result was 8 to 4 to hold rates at 3.50 to 3.75 percent. That is the highest level of dissent on a single FOMC decision since October 1992.

Three of the four dissenters were not arguing for a cut. They were arguing for tighter language. Beth Hammack, Neel Kashkari, and Lorie Logan wanted the easing bias removed from the statement. Stephen Miran, the only dove on the board, dissented in the other direction and called for a 25 basis point cut.

Markets digested the result. The DXY spiked toward 99 on FOMC day, a three-week intraday high. By Thursday it had given most of those gains back, trading near 97.8 as Japan moved to defend the yen and the ECB and BoE both held with more dovish tones than markets expected. The bid was real. The hold was not. Gold, which had already sold off to roughly $4,724 the prior week, did not rally on the dissent. Oil stayed elevated with the Strait of Hormuz still effectively closed. Powell announced this would be his final press conference as Chair, then announced he intends to stay on the Board of Governors indefinitely to defend Fed independence against the administration’s legal pressure.

Read the data carefully. There is a paradox sitting in plain view, and it is not a small one.

The Paradox in Plain View

You have three observations from the last seventy-two hours. Each one is straightforward in isolation. Together they look incoherent unless you hold the right frame.

First, the Fed stayed tight. A divided committee, three hawkish dissenters, no easing signal. With March CPI at 3.3 percent year over year, energy elevated by the Iran shock, and the labor market still printing solid payrolls, the Fed has decided 3.50 to 3.75 is the right calibration for the moment. CME FedWatch is pricing essentially no cut through the rest of 2026.

Second, the dollar got bid and then faded. DXY pushed near 99 on FOMC day before retracing to roughly 97.8 by Thursday. The hawkish hold should have firmed the dollar cleanly. It didn’t. Japan stepped in to defend the yen on suspected BoJ rate-check action. The ECB delivered a patient hold rather than the hawkish lean markets had priced, with Eurozone Q1 GDP missing at 0.1 percent and core CPI easing to 2.2 percent. The Bank of England held at 3.75 percent with a more cautious tone than the market wanted. The Fed pulled the dollar higher and three other central banks pulled back in real time.

Third, the dollar system showed fresh fractures. Powell stayed on the Board explicitly to defend Fed independence against what he described as an administration legal campaign against the central bank. Kevin Warsh, who has openly promised “regime change” at the Fed, advanced through the Senate Banking Committee on a party-line vote earlier the same morning. Iran’s continuing closure of the Strait of Hormuz is part of a year-long pattern of sanctions and counter-sanctions that has every major reserve manager re-examining dollar exposure. The yuan-settlement gambit you read about last month did not go away. It was a marker.

If you hold the “dollar is dying” frame popular for the last decade, the dollar’s spike to 99 is incoherent. If you hold the “dollar is fine, nothing fundamental changes” frame, the give-back and the system fragmentation are incoherent. Both observations are real. The frame is wrong.

Alan Watts was a British philosopher who spent most of his life doing something that sounds simple and turned out to be incredibly hard: explaining Eastern philosophy to people in the West without ruining it.

He wrote more than two dozen books and delivered hundreds of lectures, many of which were recorded and are still in wide circulation today. He had a gift that most philosophers do not -- he could make a difficult idea feel almost obvious the moment he said it out loud, as if the listener had always known it and simply lacked the words. His lectures have the quality of a long exhale.

And one of his most enduring thought experiments starts with a question so deceptively simple it sounds like something a child would ask.

Imagine, Watts said, that you could dream any dream you wanted. Whatever you wished for, the dream would be completely convincing. Every sensation, every detail, perfectly real.

What would you dream about?

Most of us would start with the obvious things. Pleasure. Beauty. Wealth. Love. And for a while, that would be wonderful. But after a hundred nights of getting exactly what you want, after a thousand nights, something would begin to happen.

You would get bored.

Not because the dreams were bad, but because they were too easy. Nothing at stake. No resistance. No surprise. Pure wish fulfillment, it turns out, is not actually that fulfilling.

So, you would start making the dreams harder.

You would introduce challenges. Then real obstacles. Then uncertainty about whether things would work out. Then genuine risk. And eventually, Watts suggested, you would go one step further. You would introduce the one ingredient that makes all the rest of it matter: you would arrange to forget that it was a dream at all.

Because without that forgetting, the stakes are not real. The loss is not real. The joy is not real. The whole thing is just theater you are watching from a safe distance. To truly experience something, you have to not know how it ends.

This is where Watts lands the idea like a quiet punch: the life you are living right now, with all of its confusion and heartbreak and surprise and occasional grace, might be exactly the dream you would have chosen. You are here, in this specific life, with these specific complications, because at some level this is what genuine experience requires. Not comfort. Not certainty. Not a smooth and predictable road.

Yet there is something in us that resists this.

We spend enormous energy trying to control things. We want to know what comes next. We build routines and backup plans and contingencies upon contingencies. We treat uncertainty as a problem to be solved rather than the very thing that makes the whole enterprise worth showing up for. And when life refuses to cooperate, when the diagnosis comes, when the relationship falls apart, when the thing we worked toward does not work out, we feel betrayed. As if the universe deviated from a contract we never actually signed.

But control is a strange thing to want so badly.

A life where everything goes as planned is a life without detours, and the detours are often where the most interesting things happen. The dinner you almost did not go to. The city you ended up in by accident. The conversation that changed the way you thought about something you thought you had figured out. None of that fits neatly into a plan. Most of it arrives uninvited.

Watts was not arguing for passivity. He was not saying that effort is pointless or that suffering is secretly good. He was making a more subtle point: that the desire for total control is a desire to opt out of being alive in any meaningful sense. A river does not fight the shape of the land. It finds its way through it. And something about that way of moving through the world, responsive rather than resistant, curious rather than braced, seems to produce a richer life than the alternative.

What Watts is really asking us to consider is whether we are taking any of this for granted. Not in the sentimental way that phrase usually gets used, but in the most literal sense. We move through days as if days are guaranteed. We treat the people around us as permanent fixtures. We assume there will be more time to do the thing, say the thing, go to the place. And all of that assumption rests on a foundation that is, if you look at it directly, completely unearned.

The problems are real. The losses are real. There is no philosophical sleight of hand that makes grief lighter or fear smaller. But consider what the alternative to all of it would look like. A flat, risk-free existence where nothing is uncertain and therefore nothing is surprising, where the outcome is always known and therefore nothing is really at stake. Most of us, if we are honest, would find that unbearable inside of a week.

Watts recorded most of his lectures informally, for small audiences, often with a drink in hand, and there is a warmth to them that academic philosophy usually lacks. He was not trying to build a system. He was trying to help people wake up to something that was right in front of them. That the strangeness of being alive, the sheer improbability of it, the fact that consciousness exists at all and that you happen to be one of the places it showed up, this is not background noise. It is the whole show.

The pundits will tell you what this means. Inflation expectations rose. The Fed might hike. The dollar firmed. The debasement trade is breaking down.

You don’t have to believe any of that to see what’s actually happening.

By the time you’re reading this, the price has moved again. The mechanics haven’t.

Why Gold Sold Off Last Week

The mechanic is plain. When inflation expectations rise faster than nominal rates, real rates fall and gold rises. When nominal rates rise faster than inflation expectations, real rates rise and gold sells off. Last week was the second case.

The University of Michigan’s five-year inflation expectations ticked up to 3.5%, the highest reading since October 2025. The 10-year Treasury yield closed Friday at 4.31%. With the Warsh hearing pulling the conversation toward a more hawkish Fed posture, traders priced stronger rate-hike risk into the curve. Real yields rose. The opportunity cost of holding a non-yielding asset rose with them. Gold sold off.

That is the textbook explanation. It is also the boring one. The interesting question is what it tells you about the thesis.

The Debasement Trade Was Never Going to Be a Straight Line

Last December’s framework still applies. Fiat currencies are designed to lose value. Hard assets endure. None of that is in dispute.

But the debasement trade isn’t a straight line. Credit contractions happen inside inflationary regimes. Carry trades unwind. Liquidity squeezes hit gold the same way they hit everything else, sometimes harder, because gold is the most liquid hard asset on earth and it gets liquidated first when investors need dollars in a hurry.

If you remember what oil did in 2022, where the consensus said no oil under $90 ever again and oil promptly cut in half, you already know the pattern. A thesis can be structurally correct and still produce violent corrections inside the bull move. Especially when the consensus is loudest.

Gold Was at $5,500 in February

Worth keeping perspective. When silver and gold went parabolic in February, gold traded above $5,500. By Friday the metal had drifted back to roughly $4,724. That was about a 14% drawdown from the February peak.

You aren’t watching the start of a sell-off. You are watching its continuation, ten weeks in. Friday’s 3% print is one bad close inside a longer mean reversion that began after gold went parabolic. The kind of correction that the framework laid out at $4,200 last October flagged as not just possible but expected. Monthly momentum readings at that October peak were more stretched than at any point since 1980. Parabolas unwind. That is what they do.

What the Sell-Off Doesn’t Tell You

Most investors will read the price action as a verdict on the thesis. It isn’t. A 3% week doesn’t resolve the question that matters.

The question that was on the table at $4,200 was this: are you watching a cyclical peak, or are you watching the early innings of a monetary system unraveling? The price tape cannot answer that for you. Only the structural drivers can.

Look at what hasn’t changed. Central banks are still net buyers of gold, and have been accelerating since the 2022 confiscation of Russian reserves rewrote the rulebook on what reserve safety actually means. Less than one percent of American households hold physical gold. The U.S. Treasury still books its reserves at $42.22 per ounce against a market price north of $4,700, a balance-sheet gap of more than 11,000% that nobody discusses openly. The Pentagon’s Office of Strategic Capital is still expanding the critical-minerals list, and gold-and-silver inclusion remains on the table. Sovereign demand for non-dollar reserve assets is structural, not sentimental.

None of that flipped last week. The price did.

It’s Not That the Pullback Doesn’t Matter

It does matter. If you bought at the February high, you are underwater. If your portfolio is more than 25% in gold, the math says you should be trimming. If you are using leverage, you should be careful.

It is just that treating the sell-off as the signal rather than the noise is how investors miss the move that actually matters. Gold sold off 47% in 1976 inside what became a roughly 2,000% nominal gain by 1980. The investors who got shaken out at the bottom of the 1976 correction watched the rest of the move from the sidelines, holding cash that kept losing purchasing power while the metal they sold ran another 700%.

Properties Don’t Change. Prices Do.

Gold’s properties did not change last week. It is still the only element on the periodic table that satisfies every requirement for money. It is still the only asset whose ownership requires no counterparty. It is still what every major central bank on earth is accumulating, what foreign reserve managers are quietly rebalancing into, what sovereigns hoard without commenting.

The price moved. The structural setup did not.

You don’t have to be a bull on the next 3% move to be a bull on the next 30%.

The thesis was never that gold moves up every week. The thesis is that gold answers a question fiat money cannot.

Last week did not change the question.

A 3% sell-off is one data point inside a thesis that has been building since the dollar got weaponized in 2022.

Global equities posted a modest net gain on the week as the Warsh confirmation hearing, a fragile ceasefire extension, and a dense earnings calendar pulled markets in competing directions.

The S&P 500 rose 0.6% on the week, the Nasdaq added 1.5%, and the Dow slipped 0.4%. A tech-driven rally provided the week’s primary upside, while persistent anxiety over the Strait of Hormuz, where the ceasefire remains deeply fragile and negotiations have yet to produce a credible framework, kept a lid on broader gains.

WTI crude surged more than 17% on the week to close near $97 per barrel as the Strait remained effectively closed, Trump ordered the Navy to target vessels laying mines in the waterway, and U.S. forces boarded a sanctioned Iranian supertanker in the Indian Ocean.

Gold declined roughly 3% on the week to close near $4,724 per ounce, pressured by rising inflation expectations and the prospect of central bank rate hikes that raised the opportunity cost of holding the non-yielding metal.

The 10-year Treasury yield closed the week at 4.31%, and the VIX finished near 18.71, elevated but off its recent highs as the ceasefire extension and late-week earnings provided some measure of relief.

The Iran conflict triggered four simultaneous supply shocks.

Markets priced oil. They priced LNG. They eventually got around to pricing fertilizer, roughly a month after the ships stopped moving. The fourth shock, the one that will likely matter most over the next three to five years, got almost no coverage at all.

Helium.

You know the pattern by now. When markets fixate on the visible shock and miss the invisible one, the invisible one is always where the money is. And when the invisible shock happens to be in a material with no substitute for the industries that define 21st century economic and military power...semiconductors, MRI scanners, quantum computers, aerospace, defense...the implications are not the kind that resolve on diplomatic timelines.

Step back. Think about what’s actually being said right now...and more importantly, what isn’t.

Two weeks after the ceasefire was announced, crude pulled back to something resembling its pre-crisis level, equity markets rallied past their 200-day moving averages, and financial commentary shifted its framing from “escalation” to “resolution.” Somewhere underneath the celebration, QatarEnergy’s CEO was confirming publicly that the missile strikes of March 18 and 19 damaged the cryogenic equipment at Ras Laffan so severely that full repair will take three to five years and cost up to $26 billion.

Three to five years. No diplomat compresses that timeline. No ceasefire reverses it.

The supply shock is not coming. It is already here.

Why the Helium Shortage Is a Technology Story, Not an Energy Story

Here’s the thing most coverage of the Hormuz situation is not saying out loud.

Qatar’s Ras Laffan Industrial City is not just an LNG facility. It is the world’s single largest helium production hub. The Persian Gulf supplies approximately one third of global helium. And helium does something no other substance on earth can do...it remains liquid close enough to absolute zero to cool the superconducting magnets in every MRI scanner in operation anywhere on the planet, to maintain the near-vacuum conditions inside every extreme ultraviolet lithography machine producing advanced chips, and to sustain the millikelvin temperatures required to keep qubits stable in quantum computers.

It cannot be synthesized in a laboratory. It cannot be meaningfully recycled at scale in most applications. Once released into the atmosphere, it escapes permanently into space and cannot be recaptured.

It’s not that the energy shock isn’t real. It is. It’s just that the energy shock is the story markets can see. The helium shock is the story they can’t. For applications below 20 Kelvin, helium is not one option among several. It is the only option.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, approximately 75% of global helium supply comes from just two countries: the United States (42%) and Qatar (33%). Losing Qatar’s share, even temporarily, removes one third of the world’s supply of a material for which no substitute exists.

And unlike oil, there is no strategic helium reserve system comparable to the IEA’s emergency oil stockholding mechanism. The U.S. Federal Helium Reserve was privatized and wound down under legislation passed in 1996 and 2013, with final assets sold to a private entity in January 2024.

A private corporation, Linde plc, now holds what functions as the world’s de facto strategic helium reserve. That a private company occupies this role has no parallel in any other critical material of comparable strategic importance.

The globalization era systematically underpriced strategic vulnerability in favor of efficiency. The privatization of the Federal Helium Reserve is a textbook example of that error. The consequences are now visible in real time.

The Three-to-Five Year Problem No Ceasefire Can Fix

This is the part that financial commentary has consistently failed to internalize.

The operational shutdown of Qatar’s helium production when the Strait closed was bad. That part is reversible. When LNG storage tanks at Ras Laffan filled to capacity and production had to halt, helium extraction halted with it...because helium is extracted as a byproduct of natural gas liquefaction, not as a standalone process. When tankers can sail again, production can restart.

But the missile strikes of March 18 and 19 are a different category entirely.

QatarEnergy CEO Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi has confirmed publicly that LNG Trains 4 and 6 suffered extensive structural damage to cryogenic distillation equipment, aluminum plate-fin heat exchangers, and rectification columns that operate with temperature differentials of as little as one to two Kelvin. These components are manufactured in specialized workshops in Germany and China, shipped as large pre-assembled modules, and commissioned over months-long installation cycles.

Repairs are expected to take three to five years. Cost estimates run from $20 to $26 billion. The North Field East expansion project that would have added 32 million tons per annum of LNG capacity, along with proportionally expanded helium production, has been suspended indefinitely.

That timeline does not change when a ceasefire is announced. It does not change when the Strait reopens. It does not change when the S&P prints fresh highs.

It is a function of physics, engineering, and manufacturing lead times that no diplomat can compress.

The same people who said the Strait would never close are now saying any reopening means this resolves quickly. The first claim was wrong. The second deserves the same scrutiny.

The base case for most institutional investors today is still, functionally, a bet that this resolves quickly and completely. Given what the report documents, that bet deserves to be made consciously, with clear eyes, and with a full understanding of what losing it would cost.

The cost of carrying the right exposures in a world that resolves quickly is modest. The cost of being incorrectly positioned in a world where the base case plays out is not modest.

The scoreboard at the end is what counts. And right now, the most important numbers on that scoreboard are not on any screen in any trading room in the world.

They are evaporating into space. Let’s dig in.

You had a long conversation this week with someone you respect.

What the Iran Debate Actually Agrees On

Before you get to where Butler and you disagree, consider what you don’t.

You both agree the Gulf is the single best example of a free-rider economy since the Second World War. These are countries that had almost nothing at the end of that war. The United States made them rich in exchange for freedom of navigation, regional deterrence, and dollar-denominated oil sales. That arrangement worked for seventy years. It isn’t working now.

You both agree Iran has spent two decades building parallel infrastructure. The Russia-Iran twenty-year strategic partnership signed three days before Trump’s second inauguration was not a rhetorical gesture. It was the formalization of a relationship the two countries had been deepening while Washington was busy in Iraq and Afghanistan. You both agree China has been buying Iranian crude at a 10 to 15% discount for years because nobody else will, which means Iran’s entire export economy is effectively a single-client operation.

You both agree the United States has genuinely shifted its strategic priorities back toward the Western Hemisphere. The national security posture is clear. The Venezuela operation was not theater...it was energy positioning. The Colombia reversal, the Mexico cooperation, the critical mineral work across Latin America...these are all of a piece.

And you both agree there is a plan. You may not like the plan. You may have concerns about whether the people executing it understand what they are stepping into. But the idea that there is no plan...that the Pentagon walked into this without contingency work for a prolonged disruption...is just silly. Declining hegemons do not improvise at this scale.

What you disagree on is who comes out ahead on the other side.

“Walking the path of global markets, one step at a time.”

Global equities surged to record highs this week as an announcement that the Strait of Hormuz would remain open to commercial shipping for the duration of the ceasefire triggered a dramatic repricing across asset classes, delivering the best week for U.S. equities since November.

The S&P 500 gained 4.5% on the week, closing Friday at a new all-time high of 7,126.06, surpassing the prior January record for the first time. The Nasdaq Composite extended its winning streak to 13 consecutive sessions, its longest since 1992, finishing the week at 24,468.48, up approximately 5.8% on the week. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 49,447.43, gaining roughly 2% on the week and pressing back toward the 50,000 level for the first time in months.

WTI crude plunged more than 16% on the week, the worst weekly decline since April 2020, settling near $84 per barrel on Friday after Iran’s Foreign Minister confirmed the Strait would be open to commercial traffic during the ceasefire period.

The 10-year Treasury yield closed the week at 4.26%, easing from the prior week’s close. Once a month, the three of us sit down to dinner. We eat well. We drink a little. And then we argue.

Not argue the way social media argues. Not to perform, not to wound, not to win. We argue the way people used to argue when they actually cared about getting things right.

We go at monetary policy, geopolitics, Russia and Ukraine, the credibility of institutions, the reach of disinformation. We talk about Trump. We talk about Iran. We talk about the slow unraveling of things we once took for granted. We often do not agree. Sometimes we are loud about it. And at the end of the evening, we go home as friends, curious, sharpened, and genuinely glad the other two exist.

I have come to believe this is one of the rarest things in the world.

We live in an era that is allergic to disagreement. Not because people have stopped holding opinions (if anything, opinions have never been louder) but because the social cost of expressing the wrong one has become so high that most people have quietly stopped. They nod in the group chat. They like the post. They learn, slowly and without quite noticing, to say what keeps the peace rather than what they actually think.

The result is that most of us are surrounded by people we never really talk to.

What we have built, the three of us, is something different. The unspoken compact at our table is not that we will agree. It is that we will be honest. And there is a crucial distinction between those two things that most people never get around to discovering.

We feel no pressure to reach consensus. None of us loses face by changing our minds, and none of us loses face by holding our ground. But we would feel enormous pressure, real discomfort, a breach of something important, if either of the other two thought we were being dishonest. Or dismissive. Or cruel. The rule at the table is not agree with me. The rule is mean what you say and treat the other person as someone worthy of respect. Everything else is negotiable.

This turns out to be extraordinarily hard to find.

Most friendships, if we are honest, involve a quiet negotiation about which topics are safe. We learn the contours of each other’s sensitivities and route around them. This is not malicious. It is human, and it is kind, up to a point. But taken too far, it produces something hollow: relationships that feel warm but contain no real friction, and therefore no real growth. We mistake comfort for closeness, and we end up spending our most interesting intellectual hours alone.

The friends worth seeking out are the ones who will push back. Not to dominate you, but because they are genuinely interested in where you are wrong. They are curious about your reasoning rather than threatened by its conclusions. They have opinions they hold firmly and revise openly. They know the difference between “I disagree with your argument” and “I reject you as a person.” And they extend you the extraordinary grace of assuming you are trying to be right, even when they think you are failing at it.

There is also something to be said for the content of the disagreement.

The things we argue about, markets, geopolitics, the behavior of governments and central banks and populations under stress, are not trivial. These are the forces that shape lives. And the truth is that no one has a reliable model of how it all works. The world is too complicated. Which means the most valuable thing you can do, intellectually, is find people who have thought hard and arrived at different places, and make them defend it. Not to humiliate them. To understand something that your own mind, running in its own grooves, cannot generate alone.

This matters in any era. But it matters especially now, in a time of genuine uncertainty, when institutions are under pressure, when the information environment is polluted enough that no single source can be fully trusted, when the temptation to retreat into a tribe that confirms your priors is stronger than it has been in decades.

The authors William Strauss and Neil Howe wrote about the cyclical nature of historical crisis, periods when old orders give way and new ones have not yet formed. Whatever you think of that framework, the felt experience of this moment is familiar: things that seemed settled are unsettled. Confidence is expensive. And it is very easy to mistake the echo of your own voice for the sound of truth.

Against that backdrop, a monthly dinner where three people argue honestly about the world is not a small thing. It is a form of sanity maintenance. It keeps you humble, because you will lose arguments you were sure you would win. It keeps you honest, because these are people who will notice if you are bullshitting. And it keeps you connected to the most important truth of all: that the world is genuinely hard to understand, and that other serious people, reasoning carefully from the same basic facts, can arrive at genuinely different conclusions.

That last part sounds obvious. It is not.

Most of us have been quietly trained, by our feeds and our filters and our social circles, to experience disagreement as a sign that something has gone wrong. But the opposite is closer to the truth. Disagreement, handled with honesty and respect, is a sign that something has gone right. It means you are actually engaging with the complexity of the world rather than managing your exposure to it.

Find the people who will argue with you. Set a recurring dinner. Pick the hardest topics. Agree on nothing except the obligation to be honest and to stay kind. Then show up every month and see what you think.

The table where you can disagree without consequence is the one worth keeping.

But the Strait of Hormuz isn’t just the world’s most important oil chokepoint. It is simultaneously the world’s primary fertilizer chokepoint...and fertilizer has no strategic reserve system equivalent to the IEA’s oil stockpile.

The Persian Gulf accounts for roughly 30 to 35% of global urea exports, 20 to 30% of global ammonia exports, and approximately 25% of globally traded sulfur...the feedstocks that underpin roughly half of all global food production. Iran’s seven urea and ammonia plants are suspended. Qatar’s Ras Laffan complex, the world’s largest LNG and gas-processing facility, has declared Force Majeure. The bypass routes through Oman that shipping planners identified as the primary alternative were compromised by drone strikes and designated war-risk zones within the first weeks.

The energy columns of the disruption are well understood and widely reported. The fertilizer columns are not.

And here’s the mechanic everyone is missing: fertilizer doesn’t have a VIX. There’s no futures screen that tells you what a 30% reduction in nitrogen application during the spring planting window means for corn yields in October. That consequence accumulates quietly in the ground. It shows up six to nine months from now on grocery shelves, in sovereign credit spreads, in the political instability of the nations least equipped to absorb what’s coming.

The 2007-08 food crisis, triggered by disruptions substantially smaller than what is now unfolding, produced rice prices up roughly 180%, wheat up roughly 130%, and instability in 48 countries. And it occurred from a lower price baseline than the one we’re starting from today.

Sometime around 600 BC, the Athenians decided to preserve the ship of Theseus, the legendary vessel that had carried him to Crete and back, as a monument to the city’s founding myth. They kept it in the harbor. And as planks rotted, they replaced them, one by one, with new wood.

The ship sailed on. Or did it?

Greek philosophers eventually turned this into a proper puzzle: once every original plank has been replaced, is the ship still the ship of Theseus? And a later, sharper version of the question: if someone had collected all the discarded original planks and reassembled them, which vessel would be the real one?

It sounds like a thought experiment for people with too much leisure time. It is, in fact, one of the most practically useful questions in finance.

Consider the United States dollar.

In 1913, the dollar was a claim on gold. You could walk into a bank and exchange paper for metal. The Federal Reserve was created that same year, a novel institution designed to smooth the edges of a periodic, brutal banking system that had been burning down every decade or so. The Fed was meant to be a lender of last resort, not a participant in ordinary economic life.

By 1933, Roosevelt had ended domestic gold convertibility. In 1944, Bretton Woods tied the dollar to gold internationally, but only for foreign governments. In 1971, Nixon closed the gold window entirely. The dollar became backed not by a commodity but by a declaration: it is legal tender. You must accept it because we say so.

Then came 2008. The Fed, facing a financial system in cardiac arrest, began purchasing assets on a scale no one had previously imagined possible. Its balance sheet grew from around $900 billion before the crisis to over $4 trillion by 2014. After COVID, it grew again, past $9 trillion. The institution that was designed to provide emergency liquidity had become the permanent buyer of last resort, the silent landlord of the mortgage market, the entity that stood behind asset prices in ways that were never debated, never voted on, and only imperfectly understood.

So here is the question: which of these things is the dollar?

There’s a split happening inside a lot of serious macro thinkers right now, and most of them won’t say it out loud.

It’s not a split about the data. The data is what it is. It’s not a split about the framework either. If you’ve been paying attention, the framework is holding. Dollar strengthening under global stress. Capital concentrating in the Imperial core. Energy weaponized as an explicit instrument of great-power competition. National security replacing price efficiency as the primary organizing principle of industrial policy. The structural thesis is not in question.

The split is something else. It’s the tension between what you know is happening...and what you wish were happening instead.

Call it conviction versus confliction.

Most people in this business pretend the two don’t coexist. They present their frameworks with the affect of a machine: coldly logical, morally unencumbered, comfortable in their certainty. But if you’ve been genuinely absorbing what’s unfolding right now...not just pattern-matching to a trade thesis but actually sitting with what it means for the world...you’re probably not as comfortable as you’re letting on.

The United States is conducting military operations across the Middle East. Roughly 50,000 U.S. troops are already stationed in the region under Operation Epic Fury, with thousands of additional Marines and 82nd Airborne paratroopers now moving toward the Persian Gulf. The Pentagon is actively preparing ground operation plans. The Strait of Hormuz is contested.

There is a plan. You may not like it. The strategic logic doesn’t particularly care whether you do. But denying its existence is itself an analytical error, and analytical errors have portfolio consequences.

That is what conviction feels like right now: clarity about the logic, discomfort about the cost.

And that discomfort is not a bug in your thinking. It’s a signal that you’re still paying attention to the full picture.

The Libertarian and the Realist: Why Both Are Right

Here’s where the confliction starts for anyone who has genuinely thought through first principles.

The libertarian tradition, which is where a lot of clear-eyed market thinkers start, holds that individuals are the fundamental unit of moral concern. That voluntary exchange produces better outcomes than coercion. That concentrated power is dangerous by design, which is precisely why the institutions of the Rules-Based Order were built to contain it. That war is, even in success, a form of failure...because of what it costs to get there.

That is a coherent framework. It it packs moral gravitas.

But realpolitik, which is the other tradition you have to reckon with honestly, tells you something different. States act in their own interest. Moral language covers for strategic maneuvering. Power vacuums always get filled. Geography, resources, and demographics shape outcomes more reliably than ideology and good intentions. And the great-power competition between major powers never truly ends...it just goes into hibernation between cycles.

It’s not that the libertarian framework is wrong. It’s that it describes the world as it should be. Realpolitik describes the world as it is.

Winston Churchill said it more precisely than most:

That is not an endorsement of war. It is an acknowledgment that once a certain threshold is crossed, the logic of events takes over. You can understand that logic without endorsing where it leads.

You can hold both of those things at once. The idealism tells you what matters. The realism tells you what is. The goal is not to pick one. The goal is to use each as a check on the other. Idealism without realism is naive. Realism without idealism tips into nihilism. Neither extreme serves you, as an investor or as a human being.

The most honest and objective analysis of what’s happening right now requires you to feel both the intellectual logic of it and the moral weight of it...and to refuse to look away from either. Let’s dig in.

Not as a historical tendency...but as an engineered guarantee. When shocks happened, the Federal Reserve had room to cut. When correlations broke, central banks had tools to restore them. When economies contracted, multilateral institutions backstopped the system. Recovery wasn’t natural selection. It was institutional design.

That’s why the 60/40 portfolio worked. That’s why long-volatility strategies worked. That’s why buying the dip worked. These weren’t natural laws of markets. They were downstream consequences of a deliberate geopolitical architecture that made mean reversion structurally reliable.

And that architecture is now being deliberately dismantled.

You can see it in the trade openness data. Global trade as a percentage of GDP peaked around 2008 and has been declining since...for the first time since the Second World War. Governments aren’t just responding to shocks. They are deliberately trading cost for security, redundancy for optimization, and control for openness. The forces driving this aren’t temporary.

Five structural accelerants are at work simultaneously: the US-China rivalry for technological and resource dominance, supply chain fragility exposed by COVID and Ukraine, the energy transition and the race for critical minerals, domestic political pressure from decades of wage stagnation and hollowed-out manufacturing regions, and the weaponization of finance itself. The freezing of Russian reserves and the exclusion of Russian banks from SWIFT removed any remaining illusion that global capital flows are politically neutral.

A Letter to Readers

This paper is the latest chapter of an argument we have been building for the better part of a year. It is worth laying out that argument in full before we begin.

In Bilateral vs. Multilateral, published in March 2025, we argued that the Trump administration’s trade policy represented something more fundamental than tariffs and negotiating tactics. What was underway was the systematic dismantling of the multilateral trade order that had governed the global economy since Bretton Woods, replaced by a bilateral framework built on leverage, coercion, and the unapologetic assertion of American economic power. This was not a tactical adjustment. It was a structural overhaul.

In Borders Before Balance Sheets, published in May 2025, we examined what happens when national interest overtakes economic logic. Protectionism does not walk alone. It drags along inflation, retaliation, and a kind of compounding uncertainty that does not show up in balance sheets until it is too late. We argued that the markets were not pricing any of it.

In National Interest and Deglobalization, published in September 2025, we named the larger pattern. The era of globalization, of efficiency as the supreme organizing principle of corporate strategy and capital allocation, was ending. A Fourth Turning had arrived. The investment paradigm was not adjusting at the margins. It was changing at a generational level. Those who recognized this early would be positioned to benefit from the structural growth created by realignment. Those who continued applying the globalization playbook would risk obsolescence in a world where sovereignty, security, and survival had once again become the cornerstones of value.

In Tehran in the Crosswinds, published in July 2025, we made a point that bears repeating here: geopolitical instability and capital market structure are no longer separate subjects. Sovereign priorities now shape liquidity, asset flows, and trade architecture. Iran was our case study. The broader point was universal.

In The Backyard, published in February 2026, we mapped the rewiring of the Western Hemisphere in real time. U.S. forces had removed Nicolas Maduro from power. American carrier strike groups were massing near the Strait of Hormuz. Every election held across Latin America in 2025 had been won by a conservative or right-wing candidate oriented explicitly toward Washington. China’s two decades of patient investment in the Americas, one port, one infrastructure deal, one intelligence operation at a time, were fracturing. The Monroe Doctrine, buried for decades under the weight of its own history, was functioning again.

In Stablecoin Wars, published in February 2026, we argued that the dollar is not merely defending its reserve currency status. It is actively extending it, encoding American monetary hegemony into the digital infrastructure of global commerce, one stablecoin transaction at a time. The battles being fought over who controls that infrastructure are not abstract policy debates. They are power struggles with trillion-dollar stakes.

This paper is the investment implications chapter of everything we have written.

The short answer is this: the toolkit most professional investors are using to manage tail risk was built for a world that is disappearing. Long volatility strategies, options, VIX products, variance swaps, these instruments are calibrated to a fundamental assumption that almost nobody states out loud because almost nobody has needed to question it until now. The assumption is that things mean-revert. That a shock, however severe, eventually resolves back toward a prior equilibrium. That the institutional architecture, the Federal Reserve, the dollar system, and multilateral trade agreements, provides a durable floor beneath which things do not permanently fall.

That assumption held from 1945 to roughly 2020. It is not obviously true today.

What we are living through is not a cycle. It is a regime change. The difference matters enormously for how you build a portfolio. In a cyclical downturn, patience is rewarded. Buy the dip. The central bank will backstop. The institutions will hold. In a regime change, the mean to which you expect reversion may cease to exist. The equilibrium you are waiting to return to is gone.

As we wrote in National Interest and Deglobalization, Fourth Turnings do not announce themselves with clarity. They are only recognized in hindsight, when the chaos has already reordered the world. We believe we are living through one now. This paper makes the case for what that means for your portfolio, and what to do about it.

We want to be clear about what this paper is and is not. It is not a recommendation to panic, liquidate, or retreat from markets. It is not a prediction that acute discontinuity is inevitable or even likely in the near term. What it is, is an honest assessment of the probability distribution investors are actually facing, and an argument that the standard institutional response to that distribution is dangerously mis calibrated.

The cost of carrying discontinuity insurance in a world that muddles through is manageable. The cost of being uninsured in a world that breaks is not.

We also hold gold. We are not dollar bears out of ideology or patriotism, and we are not forecasters of doom. We assess the world as it is. And the world as it looks considerably more like the preconditions for a wartime discontinuity than anything we have seen since the 1970s, or in some respects since the 1930s.

That is not a comfortable conclusion.

But it is the honest one. Let’s dig in.

Iran’s Yuan Oil Demand

The hot takes started flying before the ink was dry.

Iran announced it. Oil spiked past $110 a barrel. WTI pushed into the high nineties. In Asia, spot crude for immediate delivery crossed $150. And suddenly, every pundit who couldn’t find the Strait of Hormuz on a map six weeks ago was declaring the end of the petrodollar system.

The headline writes itself: Iran bans dollar oil sales. Yuan rises. Dollar dominance collapses.

You know the pattern by now. The narrative runs ahead of the mechanics. And when the narrative runs ahead of the mechanics, you get hurt.

So before you make any decisions based on what you’re reading in the financial press right now, step back. Think about what’s actually being said here...and more importantly, what isn’t. Let’s dig in.

Global markets experienced a volatile week, with a two-day rally at the start giving way to sharp losses mid-week and into Friday, leaving U.S. benchmarks lower for a fourth consecutive week.

The S&P 500 closed the week at 6,506, breaking below its 200-day moving average for the first time since May 2025. The Russell 2000 entered correction territory on Friday, falling more than 10% from its recent high, the first major U.S. benchmark to do so in 2026.

Gold posted its worst weekly performance since March 2020, falling approximately 7% on the week to close near $4,509. Silver dropped more than 15% on the week.

Monetary policy was in focus throughout the week, as central banks in the U.S., the euro zone, the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, Sweden, and Switzerland all concluded their March meetings and opted to leave policy rates unchanged. The Federal Reserve released an updated set of economic projections, raising its forecasts for headline and core inflation in 2026 while maintaining its projection for one interest-rate cut in 2026.

The Week That Was

The week opened Monday with the regular 13-week and 26-week Treasury bill auctions proceeding as scheduled without notable disruption, as markets stabilized somewhat following the prior week’s volatility.

Tuesday’s data calendar delivered a positive surprise on pending home sales. The National Association of Realtors reported that the February Pending Home Sales Index rose 1.8% month-over-month to 72.1, beating the consensus forecast of a 0.6% decline and marking the first increase in three months. Year-over-year sales declined 0.8%. The Midwest led with a 4.6% gain, the South rose 2.7%, and the West edged up 0.9%, while the Northeast fell 3.6%. NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun attributed the slight gain to improved affordability conditions, but cautioned those conditions could reverse if higher oil prices push mortgage rates higher. The Conference Board’s February Leading Economic Index, also scheduled for Tuesday, was not released this week due to delays stemming from the government shutdown.

Wednesday’s Producer Price Index came in significantly hotter than expected. The PPI for final demand rose 0.7% in February on a seasonally adjusted basis, well above the 0.3% consensus and the largest monthly increase since August 2023. On an annual basis, headline PPI jumped to 3.4%, the highest in a year. Final demand goods prices surged 1.1%, led by a 48.9% jump in prices for fresh and dry vegetables, along with increases in diesel fuel, eggs, gasoline, and jet fuel. Core PPI rose 3.9% year-over-year. The data captured conditions before the Iran conflict fully escalated energy prices, leading markets to view the print as a floor rather than a ceiling on near-term inflation.

The Federal Reserve held the federal funds rate at 3.5% to 3.75% on an 11-1 vote, as expected. Governor Stephen Miran dissented in favor of a 25 basis point cut. The updated Summary of Economic Projections raised inflation forecasts, cut the growth outlook, and maintained the median projection of one rate cut in 2026, with seven of the 19 participants projecting no cuts at all. Chair Powell said it was “too soon to know” the impact of the Iran conflict, that near-term inflation expectations had risen “likely reflecting the substantial rise in oil prices caused by the supply disruptions in the Middle East,” and that job creation had “slowed to essentially zero.”

Thursday’s Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index came in well above expectations, rising to 18.1 from 16.3 in February against a consensus forecast of 10.0...the highest reading since September 2025. The shipments index surged 22 points to 22.2, its highest since January 2025, and both price indexes rose on the month.

Friday was scheduled to bring the BLS’s final revision to fourth-quarter 2025 productivity. That revised reading has been rescheduled to March 24. The preliminary estimate released March 5 showed nonfarm business sector labor productivity increased 2.8% in Q4 2025.
